Winchester 94 in .38-55

Postby kccraft on Sun 17 Jun 2012 8:52 pm

I just saw this add on KSL for a Winchester 94 (made in 1895) chambered in .38-55:

http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=20879473&cat=&s_cid=rss-classifieds-

From what I can gather, if this was in far better condition it would be worth a ton... but I'm wondering if this would be a bad buy at around $170 for the condition it is in (2% blue remaining, pitting, etc).

I also have found out that .38-55 is crazy expensive to buy factory rounds, and I read that they can be finicky to reload, so I realize that ammunition might be a headache.

Aside from that... it seems like a fun gun to have in the collection. And perhaps I'd even consider getting a new blue put on it (since the collectors value is already destroyed).

Anyone able to give me some advice?

Thanks,

I'm guessing he'll expect more than that for it, but it would be a fun gun to own. My step grandfather had an old Winchester 44-40 saddle carbine that I used to deer hunt with, a number of years ago. I was very sad to see it go to his side of the family, though I did understand. Great little gun, outrageously expensive to shoot, even back then. If you've talked to him, and know he'd take $170 for it, I'd snap it up. If I hadn't just given away a deer rifle, and bought my 9mm pistol I'd look hard at it myself.

I haven't talked to him yet, but when searching KSL that add shows $170. Then when you open the add it just shows "best offer." So I'm not sure whether that neighborhood is the price is is looking or not.

Well, can't hurt to ping him and see. :)

EDIT: Correction, it shows up as $175 on my RSS feed, not $170.

Rebluing it would just make things worse. If you want to consider keeping some interest from the "collectors" market, you shouldn't reblue it.

The condition described seems decent enough to be worth taking a look. But... a $175 asking price is questionable. My money would be on either: It has a major flaw that has not been disclosed. Or, it's a typo (or an attention-getter), and the asking price is quite a bit higher.
I need a new signature. This one sucks.

Hey everyone, I think its really cool you found my ad on ksl, and posted it to this form. I'm really confused about the $175 mix up. It must be a mistake on ksl's side. I did have a price at first (much higher than $175), but then i removed it and decided to just accept offers. I hope that clears up a little confusion. If interested, your welcome to come inspect the rifle and shoot it.

That makes sense, it must be a mix-up on KSL's end. I thought 175 seemed too good to be true. :)

It is an intriguing rifle, but I'm not sure I can make a respectable offer, seeing as how it was too good to be true. :D

Hope you find a great home for it!

I completely understand. I've actually had a few offers that were respectable, but i've had to back out of them. I'm simply not ready to sell. I listed the rifle on a whim just to see what would happen. Most people would let go of just about anything for the right price. However, the right price for me is simply more than what the rifle is worth at this time. I guess i'm just feeling stupid for letting it go. In the mean time i'm just going to have to enjoy the history it has.
