Which Shotty...

Bored at work so I thought I'd ask.

Mossberg 500 or Remington 870?
What are your thoughts on the two?

Any others you'd recommend?

It'll mainly be used for home defense but I'll want to shoot clay sometimes.

Yeah my dads got an 870 express that I really like to shoot, but a lot of people like the Mossberg better.

What about the 870 do you like?

I love that my mossy's floorplate retractes. That was a big seller for me. However I'm sure it can be trained around and the 870 is the most widely owned shotgun in America. When it comes to accessories the 870 is like the Glock of the shotgun world, anything you want basically can be had, or has been done. The Mossberg is a close second. From my understanding both will serve your grandchildren well. I say shoot em and decide. Good luck.

I have both. Can't go wrong with either.
That being said, 870 gets my vote.

Thanks! I'm definitely going to shoot a mossberg before I choose, it's just a matter of finding the time and someone willing to let me shoot theirs.

Find the time. You can shoot mine....tho it's a goofy model. Mossberg 500 roadblocker w/a stock. Not my most educated buy....but it was also my first, so cut me some slack. Just need a stock barrel and all will be well with it.

I appreciate that. I'll have to see when I can go shoot some clay and bring the 870 to compare side by side.

Is there really any drawbacks to either of the shotguns?

Can't speak for the 870. One drawback with my Mossberg comes when using pistol grip stocks. The safety becomes virtually un-usable because of its position. However, on the flip side, when using a standard stock, I prefer the Mossberg safety position, because I can use my thumb. Again, something training can take care of on either platform. Minus the PG stock on a Mossberg. Then to my knowledge it's a pain no matter how you train.

If it were me, I would just find out which one I could get cheaper, and go with that one. They are very similar and both great weapons.

That's definitely a factor too, and I know I could get a mossberg 500 for cheaper right now (good one in the classifieds) but I'm out of cash. Aren't we all?

As a guy who has shot a lot of clays and waterfowl I have to say you are looking for 2 different types of shotguns. If you seriously want to shot clays you need a shotgun that fits you and points were you want it when shouldering. I love the 870 and shot a lot of stuff with it growing up but found that the Benelli points way better and my hits increased. I went from 15 to 20 clays with the 870 to 23 to 25 clays with the Benelli the first time I shot it. For a home defense short barrel shotgun throw a set of rifle sights on it or optic and any old shotgun will do. My 870 now runs an 18" barrel and extended mag for home defense. I have handled and shot a shotgun so much that I don't like the feal of the rifle stock or other crud being but on them I just like it to be a shotgun.

I've had my Benelli Nova for over 10 years now - got it soon afiter it came out - and I have loved it. Never had an issue at all. It feels much more solid and well built than other comparable shotguns and operates very smoothly. Love it. I don't know if would would be the ideal tactical home defense (and it sounds like you aren't really looking for the "tactical") but as far as hunting and clays it is awesome. It is well worth its price. You could call me a Nova evangelist as I have sold four of them to friends and family. I know they do make a tactical version as well, I think it has a pistol grip and a short bbl.

Not an expert on the subject, but I agree about the gun needing to fit you for clays and hunting. The only shotgun I ever "loved" was my dad's Belgian made Browning semi auto 12 gauge. Pretty engraving, a joy to shoot, and I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. My little brother had a 20 gauge bolt action. Don't even remember the brand. Butt ugly thing, slow to shoot, and I'd hit 8 out of 10 clays with it, nearly every time I shot it...hated the gun, loved the way it shot.

All that said...I'm a Remington fan though.
