Even if you're not a scout leader, if you take advantage of this fantastic offer that the GSL council arranges, please, please, get in touch with your local scout troops after you're certified and offer them your services. BSA policy requires NRA certified instructors and RSOs at all BSA shooting events, and it really creates problems for a lot of troops who'd like to go shooting.
So, if you get NRA certified through one of these super-cheap, BSA-sponsored courses, PLEASE pay it forward by making yourself available to lead scout shooting events and to teach scouts to shoot. It's only fair... and it's actually a lot of fun. I have never, ever taken a group of teenage boys out shooting that they and all of the adult leaders didn't have a fantastic time. Boys love guns! And it's a love that all of the rest of us who love guns -- and who want to increase the number of future voters with favorable opinions of shooting, hunting and guns in general -- should do our best to share.
Stepping off my soapbox now. End of PSA.
