$48 NRA Pistol Instructors Course (STILL ON)

If you signed up for the NRA Pistol Instructor Course (and the NRA Basic Instructor), you are still signed up for it. I've been asked to drop the information from being public for this particular event as any remaining available slots in the class are intended for Scout leaders.

This means if you are a SCOUT LEADER there are seats available for an NRA Basic Instructor and NRA Pistol Shooting Instructor available Sep 28, 29 for $48. PM me for details. South Ogden is the location.

Even if you're not a scout leader, if you take advantage of this fantastic offer that the GSL council arranges, please, please, get in touch with your local scout troops after you're certified and offer them your services. BSA policy requires NRA certified instructors and RSOs at all BSA shooting events, and it really creates problems for a lot of troops who'd like to go shooting.

So, if you get NRA certified through one of these super-cheap, BSA-sponsored courses, PLEASE pay it forward by making yourself available to lead scout shooting events and to teach scouts to shoot. It's only fair... and it's actually a lot of fun. I have never, ever taken a group of teenage boys out shooting that they and all of the adult leaders didn't have a fantastic time. Boys love guns! And it's a love that all of the rest of us who love guns -- and who want to increase the number of future voters with favorable opinions of shooting, hunting and guns in general -- should do our best to share.

Stepping off my soapbox now. End of PSA.

I'm guessing that instructors do the scout classes for free, is that correct? I remember my brother was asked to do the shotgun class a few years ago, and they paid for the instructor course. I don't mind helping out the scouts at all. I love teaching people how to shoot.

My question to the current instructors that do this is, do you charge the scouts for ammo, range fees, etc? Does the scout fund cover that? Do you take care of it? Maybe get donations? I would like to be prepared for when the time comes.

I volunteer my time with the scouts. Actual expenses the Troops should pay for: ammo, range fees, etc.

I volunteer for the scouts, but only in an RSO capacity until this course is done. I also provide a single brick of .22LR each time I go out, too. I'm not asked to, but for $20, I'm making sure that a bunch of scouts have a good time with guns.

I usually get the troop to cover expenses -- though I typically end up donating some ammo, mainly because I forget to tell them how much to reimburse me.

The troop brings some ammo as well, but in a lot of cases, money is tight so that $20 might get them a whole lot more in another area.

Do you stick to shooting .22lr only, or do you let them shoot others as well? For $20 you could probably let a bunch of scouts have a lot of fun with a .22, but other calibers get expensive quick with a group of people.

Looks like I may have to get a .22 revolver soon. Crying' shame I tell ya.

Scouts under 14 (those who are not yet Venture scouts) can only shoot .22LR MAX. Rifles, not handguns. 14+ can shoot anything. Cub Scouts can only shoot BB guns.

If I understand you correctly, scouts under 14 aren't allowed to shoot a .22 pistol. So basically this pistol class would only be for scouts 14 or older, correct?

To be exact, that is the case. Very few places will cancel a trip because the only instructor is a Pistol instructor and not a Rifle instructor. I've been told (second hand knowledge) that the differences between the two are minor with the more difficult portions belonging to pistols.
