To make the movie sell-able to Chinese audiences, they changed the invading forces from Chinese to North Korean.

This is a joke. The movie's underlying plot is just so completely divorced from any reality, that I don't imagine I'll be able to watch it...though I'll reserve judgement until I hear more specifics.

I loved the first movie, but the idea of N Korea invading anything larger than Hawaii or farther away than S Korea is ludicrous. I suspect I'll watch it when it gets to streaming on Netflix, or possibly Redbox it. But I have no enthusiasm for it.

It will suck.

Actually, there's a good chance it'll actually be better than the original... but there's no way in heck it will ever live up to my memory of the original, and seeing it would just degrade both for me, so I doubt I will.

Hmm... I think I should probably also avoid watching the original, too, lest it degrade my memory of itself.

Its ironic, but I just watched the original last week on netflix. I always loved that movie, even with some questionable acting and other failings.

The original was/is one of my all time favorites! BTW it wasn't Chinese forces in the original movie.. it was Russian and Cuba forces that invaded the US. Not that I disagree with your point... just a fact clarification.

Russian, cuban, and nicauraguan actually. But I think his point was that on the reboot, the original plan was for the enemy to be Chinese, but economic reality (aka not wanting to have the movie banned in China) forced them to change the enemy to the DPRK.

Right, this -remake- was originally Chinese forces. But apparently the almighty dollar is more important than making a better movie for domestic audiences.

According to my conspiracy-theorist neighbor....
Obama is going to call on the Chinese as an occupational force, when he finally makes his move to form his dictatorship in the US. So, he threatened the film makers with being arrested as terrorists and locked up forever, if they didn't remove the Chinese references. (rough paraphrase)

As for the actual film...
I'll probably watch it, but I won't go out of my way to do so. I may not even see it in a theater; just wait until it hits Red Box or Netflix.
I'm not sure how well I'll like it, though. They're clearly trying to retain some very specific scenes and parts of the story line from the original, but also attempting to update the film for 'modern' audiences. ...that almost never works for me (Count of Monte Cristo {2002} being a rare exception).

To me, the original film is a 'B' movie with a stupid plot and bad actors. I mean, come on, Patrick Swayze in the leading role? They set themselves up for failure, before they even started filming.
So, it's quite possible that I may consider the new version to be a better film, even if I don't like it as much. (...not that I'm a big fan of the original, anyway. If I wrote down my top 100 films, it probably woudn't even come to mind, let alone make the list.)
I need a new signature. This one sucks.

the original was always a favorite of mine... maybe its because when it came out originally i was around the same age as the characters in the movie, so my friends and I could totally see ourselves in the resistance fighter role.

And yes, from the trailer there are a few scenes that it definately seems like they are trying to retain, but a lot of the stuff has been rewritten. From what I gathered from the trailer, it seems like the way the DPRK was able to pull off their invasion was due to the use of some EMP type device which knocked out power on the west coast, allowing them to launch a surprise attack. Thats a huge stretch, I know... I mean first of all if the DPRK designed said EMP weapon, it probably wouldn work right anyway :)

But really, is it any less believable than the Russians, CUbans, and Nicaraugans launching a surprise airborn assault on a small town in colorado ? And then somehow magically having craploads (I mean way more than could easily be airlifted in) of ZSU-23-4's, BTRs, and BMPs ?

I would like to say something: I'd be proud to go up against an enemy (foreign or domestic) with you guys..I'm sure Our weaponry and skill will be far superior than that in the movie..

But no way in heck are we going to look as good as the pretty boys they have playing the staring roles in this one.
