Dog training....

Postby OneShotXD on Tue 19 Jun 2012 5:35 pm

So I have a boxer.

He is a lazy turd that is about 3 now and I was wondering if anybody has experience with training dogs for home security purposes.

I want him to do stuff like make rounds at night, bark at intruders, etc.

Any pointers?

Just found out that my offer was accepted on my new house today and since I can't afford my home defense shotty yet I'd like to try an add a security oriented dog to my defense arsenal in the mean time.

His name is Bowser. Purebred and all. Just thought I'd share a picture.

(I know the chihuahua won't do much and I'm prepared for all the little dog jokes you can throw at me :lol2: )

I know enough about dog training, as in I have a Rally titled Border Collie, to know that you have to start with a good obedience foundation, before you can really work on the other stuff. If you can't afford to have the training done, which I'm assuming would be a stretch, Golden Spike Dog Obedience club offers basic obedience classes at $75.00 for an 8 week class, unless you join the club. After you join, it's only $10.00 per class. They offer several levels of obedience, but nothing in the home security line. I'm sure you can find decent books on the subject, and I know that there is a schutzhund training class in SLC, but not sure of nights of week, prices etc. If you're interested in GSDOC I can let you know when the next class starts, probably around the first week in July. They meet on Tues. nights at the Weber County Fairgrounds.

I might or might not be attending the next session. If they're offering advanced Rally, I will. If not, I'll have to look at what's offered.

Let me know if you have any interest, and I'll follow up. I could probably find the info on the personal protection dog (Schutzhund) training, but I promise. NO ONE would train a dog for personal protection, that wasn't already very obedient. It's not worth the risk.

Mel

Edit: BTW, for a warning dog, the Chihuahua might surprise you. Our Papillion is much more sensitive to noises and responsive to them than the Border Collie. Admittedly, when the Border Collie barks, she gets a lot more attention from the visitor/intruder...but the little one is the early warning system.

The little rat might just do fine for home security purposes...if he's judicious in his barking, he can make a very effective alarm!

Try having someone open the doors (carefully so as not to get bit) to you house when you are not at home and see what happens. I have had boxers before and I think he might surprise you.

Don's in ogden is a very good training center. I've taken two dogs there, and recomend them. And take the ankle biter too, the small dogs will often inspire the larger dogs to try harder. And the legged door bells also are good for waking up the big dog, if there is a problem. They can make a good team. A hyper alert purse dog, and a (fill in the blank, big dog) are a great combo for home protection.

+ 1
They can be bonkers. Very possessive of their territory.

I second the motion for Don's if you can afford them. They do a great job, and we've worked with Linda (Don's wife) to correct an aggression issue with our Papillion. They will cost you more, but they will do an excellent job.

Didn't even think of that. Going to try when I get home.

Any contact info for Don's? Also, I'd love more info on those classes. You could PM me if you want, or just post here for benefit of any onlookers looking for the same info.

Don's Pet Care & Training Ctr
1481 Gibson Ave Ogden, UT 84404(801) 393-5143

And gsdoc.org

Looks like they've posted the next training classes will start on July 10, but they haven't updated the class list yet. It says that basic obedience is full, but I"m pretty sure that's still for the current session. I'll check with the instructor later (she's teaching a class right now, or barely home) and post for sure.

I'll check with them for sure, but funding really is an issue. I'm flat broke

Actually the little dogs will sometimes surprise you with how effective they are to alerting you to intruders or unusual noises in the night. My ex's kids on more than one occasion had a perfectly good sneak in/out ruined by the Pugs hearing it and going bonkers.

That's not even a boxer... it's a long-haired chihuahua. The dog NEXT to it is a boxer, though. ;)

I am sure there are some trainers you can find depending on where you live. Get the basics out of the way. If you leave anywhere near magna, or moving near magna Scoone Dizzle does dog training, cgc, and agility. She does a pretty good class for the price.

-until the little guys going off at every stinkin' little thing wears you down... Roommate gets off work at 6, there's that window between 6 and 9 (my alarm) when they're out, running around, and reasserting their "dominance" at any "challenging sound" they pick up on. :|

And yes, they're chihuahuas... :|

Granted, something during their normally dormant hours would probably get my attention. Barely makes up for those 3 hours of restless sleep every week day though...
