Arches National Park experience

Postby rpyne on Wed 13 Jun 2012 9:06 pm

I spent the day Monday exploring Arches with my daughter and grandkids. Pretty uneventful other than one older (than me) guy as we were leaving Sand Dune Arch. He made a point of catching up to me and says "I may be wrong but I think the hammer on your revolver is cocked". I replied "yup" while thinking "you don't know the difference between a revolver and a semi-auto and are trying to 'warn' me about how I am carrying?"

Oh well, it was a great day, I even survived the hike to Delicate Arch. Not bad for a fat, out of shape desk jockey.

I wouldn't even call that a minor event. Sure, he was uninformed, but he was just trying to be helpful, and even started out the conversation admitting that he may be wrong.

Rather than a chance to get irritated and post about it on the web, I'd take that as a chance to have a friendly chat, make a friend, and help a friendly gentleman learn more and become comfortable with law-abiding gun-owners.

I had a similarly minor occurance in Zions earlier this year. Went hiking and because of the heat causing chafing from the grip, I tucked my shirt in, which left the grip of my sidearm exposed. Ran into a guy that wanted my gf and I to take some pictures of the guy with his family so we obliged, and then afterwards I sat down on a rock or something and the guy comes up and says "hey your showing there" pointing to my gun. I replied "yeah, heat was causing it to chafe too much with the hike so I had to tuck my shirt in and open carry for a bit". We ended up in a conversation about what I was carrying, etc and it ended up being an ok experience.

As with yours, I wouldnt consider that one a big deal. If the guy had freaked out and ran to a ranger and you got hassled, then id worry about it more.
