New BH Serpa for my GLOCK 19...not a huge fan

Postby bltdonahue on Thu 26 Jul 2012 8:59 pm

Since I'll be watching Batman soon, and decided that I really don't want to EVER get in a firefight...and if I do, I really don't want to be carrying my usual piece (Ruger LCP), I've decided to try to find ways to actually willingly carry my GLOCK 19.

-When- I carry it (rarely), it's in an IWB Uncle Mike's side-kick. This is actually a fine holster, but IWB is just a pain (literally).

So I tried out a BlackHawk Serpa at the store, and decided to buy it.

Now, I actually think this is an excellent holster...but I put on the pancake so I could actually remove/relocate it as needed.

Um...installing this holster is a pain. Removing it involves kung-fu I don't possess.

I'll give it major points for wear comfort. I'll give it great points for "draw-ability" (though certainly I'll want to practice a bit with it to really get it down).

I give it almost no points for putting it on or taking it off. It's also not especially concealable (but I don't care TOO much about that).

Can someone provide pointers for me putting this thing on, and taking it off? I can't carry at work, and I'd certainly like to be able to remove it without feeling like I'm a dog chasing my own tail.

It's kind of a trick, you have to kind of twist it one way, and they back, and work it off of your belt. You also have to kind of push the bottom of the holster away from you. I don't really see the problem putting it on though.

This is assuming you have the paddle attachment on it.

Putting it on is easy, and so is taking it off once you get the hang of it.

This is for the paddle not the belt attachment.

Putting it on:
I will grip the main body of the holster near the bottom. Using a couple fingers, I push the outer ring (the part that goes inside your pants) away from the main body of the holster. I use my weak side hand to make a gap between my body and pants. Slide the outer ring into the pants. Once in there you can use your pants as leverage and pull the holster away from your body to get the hooks over your belt.

Taking it off:
I use two hands for this as well. Hold your pants and belt while you unhook the outer hooks from under l your belt. Once that is done, put your weak hand inside your pants and grab it near the hook. Keep the hook pulled out away from the body of the holster while you slide the holster up and out of your pants.

Once you get the hang of it, it will take you just a few seconds to do this.

So...I'll have to find a YouTube video of this.

Meanwhile, I'll just remind myself that I don't carry because it's easy (NOT carrying is certainly the easiest option...if I am willing to accept any and all violence directed at me without an effective response). I carry because I matter, and my family matters.

Meanwhile, getting finger cramps and back problems trying to pull this danged pancake out...LOL

Lol, they can be a pain, and it's the reason I usually just use the belt loops with my various Serpas.

BTW, I thought I'd mention -- I recommend taking a look at the one made for the G26. It fits the G19 much better, IMO -- the one for the G19 has quite a bit (like, half an inch) of dead space at the bottom of the holster -- almost like it was just a copy of the G17 holster -- while the Serpa made for the G26 used with a G19 allows the front sight (and about an inch past it) to protrude out of the bottom of the holster. It's also quite a bit smaller, which I prefer -- I don't like big, bulky holsters much.

Anyway, just food for thought.
I looked up "Ninjas" at Thesaurus.com.

Thesaurus.com: "Ninjas can not be found."

Well played, Ninjas. Well played.
