Target shooters cited for sparking 150-acre blaze

Witnesses heard gunfire and an explosion and saw a group of individuals leaving the area where the fire started.

Another anecdotal datum for shooting+stupidity = wildfires. Not just shooting. Tannerite or propane can, whatever, in this environment, that's not very smart.
It's not about the odds, it's about the stakes.

good job on the Scouts to report it... stupid people need to be fined like this...
Using the lessons I've gleaned from Zombie movies, I would recommend you have at least one round of ammunition per person currently living within a 30 mile radius of your location...

Scouts did not report this incident, in fact the BLM, Utah County Commissioner, Utah County Sheriffs, Utah Shooting Sports and of course Channel 5 were just across the street discussing the issues of a home owner having stray bullets hitting her house. When they heard the explosion and the fire start. They all had responded within a couple of minutes.

The Utah Shooting Sports Council in working with the BLM, Utah County and others are doing what we can to not have this area shut down and as the USSC Chair, Clark Aposhian was telling me tonight, this was behavior did us no good in the cause to keep this area open and really added fuel to the fire of getting this closed. Correct in your thinking that it is BLM land and they can not close it. We all agree on this, but that is not what everyone was thinking yesterday.

Stupidity was at its best.......

More to come, I have said enough tonight.

oh one i read said Scouts were in the area and were part of the report

Someone shot, and there's like (an explosion) and fire went everywhere," said Zach Tidwell, a Provo Boy Scout who was with another group of target shooters.

The shooters who sparked the blaze were cited for firing at an exploding target, which is illegal in Utah County.

"People do crazy things, like putting aerosol cans for targets, or things like that. It's just insane," said Ethan Hendricks, also a member of the Provo Boy Scout troop

same one that is linked ;)

I shot over the burned area on Saturday, I figured it was less likely to burn again....

Here is another fire that started today and they claim that target shooters started a fire.

http://www.abc4.com/content/news/top_stories/story/Wildfire-rages-near-Utah-Lake/xkHIvyXdoEOD013Y4rmWBw.cspx

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah (ABC4 News) - Fire crews were working on a wildfire burning just west of Utah lake in Utah County. The fire started late Thursday morning and has burned over 60 acres.

Officials say the fire, nicknamed the "Dump Fire" because it is near a landfill, was sparked by target shooters.

Several agencies including the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service and Utah County were working to put out the fire.

Two helicopters and multiple ground crews were also on scene.

Only 10% of the fire had been contained by Thursday afternoon and officials estimate it will take another two to three days to completely contain it.

So far, no homes have been threatened.
