Shoulder or Ankle?

Postby OneShotXD on Mon 28 May 2012 8:13 pm

I have an XDM 3.8 Compact in the great flavor of 45  , and I would like to carry it at work. I've thought it over and decided my only two real options are shoulder or ankle. Ankle seems like it would be a hassle with a gun as heavy as this and in order to get to it I'd have to bend down and pull up my pant leg. On the other hand, shoulder holster would probably be more comfortable but I have to untuck my shirt to get to it and I don't like the angle the gun is pointing while I would be sitting. Any suggestions? I'm leaning more to the shoulder...

Id go shoulder as well, unless you plan on bringing back bell bottoms, I don't think the ankle would work too well.

Also depends on your work attire. If you wear button up collar shirts that must be tucked in, then it may be cumbersome to draw, but with ptactice will work. And a gun that is a bit slow to draw trumps no gun.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Since tucking in my shirt is a requirement of "business casual" I'm just trying to find the best way to work around it. Dress codes suck :P

There are dress shirts made by companies like 5.11 tactical that are perfect to increase your speed. They put buttons on a shirt for looks, but the shirt is actually fastened with snaps. You would never know its not a normal collared shirt, but if you need your gun just grab the shirt and pull it apart for super fast access.

There are several IWB holsters that are "tuckable" that might be an option. I have a Desantis Sof-Tuck that I really like, and Galco makes one, too.

They're an IWB holster that allows you to tuck in your shirt over the gun, and only the clips of the holster are visible (though still hard to spot). They work great, but I have to wear my shirts a little more "baggy" depending on the gun I have on. It's incredibly easy to conceal my P238 with one of these.

I prefer the Desantis version to the Galco because I can adjust the cant of the holster. Here's one for your XDM (I bought mine off eBay from the same dude).

I looked up "Ninjas" at Thesaurus.com.

Thesaurus.com: "Ninjas can not be found."

Well played, Ninjas. Well played.

Dang I like that! It's not a bad price at 25 bones either.

This can also be done by any competent seamstress. I've done it before for quick change theater costumes.

I think this ^^ is the best idea. Shoulder holsters and ankle holsters would be harder to access if needed, and your firearm will most likely be sweeping people in a shoulder holster. An IWB holster will be much quicker to access even with a tucked in shirt. The Crossbreed supertuck or Concealment Solutions Black Mamba will also work great for an IWB holster that you can tuck your dress shirt over with great concealment. I have one of each and really like them. I've carried a Sig P229 under a tucked in dress shirt multiple times without any printing in a Supertuck, and the P229 is a big gun.

That being said, $25 is a pretty decent price on that Desantis. The Supertuck or Black Mamba would probably be more comfortable, but they run about $70. If money is tight, I would try the Desantis

Yeah the angle the gun would sit all day in the shoulder holster is my main problem with it. I like the desantis and break away shirts. Both good ideas and I really can't beat the price in that eBay link.

Just don't like the idea of the shoulder pointing at people behind me all day. Especially in the car.

And you can wear a blue undershirt with a big red 'S' on it for added effect. :)

I carry my CZ-82 in a kholster tuckable and it's not noticeable. Thankfully I don't have to do 'business casual' even though I work for a significant financial company. I did have to stop wearing normal t-shirts and go to more casual button-up shirts with lots of different patterns on them. Some of them have dress-shirt style tails and are tucked in, but more of them are square-cut and hang quite nicely. I also need to pick up a shoulder holster for it but that's for my other favorite style of dress: Waders and a fishing vest.

Side note: when we have a 'business casual' day when big-wigs are in town, I wear a suit. It's always fun to see the reaction of new people when the most casual guy shows up in a suit. I hate business casual. I like jeans + t-shirts and I like suits, but I don't like much in the middle.

I'm a fan of the Comp-Tac Minotaur MTAC, which is a tuckable, in-waistband holster much like the CrossBreed Supertuck. I have been known to carry with it while wearing dress clothes, and it conceals nicely.

What about the Galco Kingtuck? Anybody have any experiences with those?

The guy in the vid seemed to lean more towards the kingtuck. I don't know. I think I'm going to try the Desantis for now because it's cheap but when I spring for one I want to make sure I get the right one.
